About Diverse Voices

Diverse Voices began in 1984 as the Homosexual Community Welfare Service (HCWS) providing telephone counselling and information. Peer telephone counselling services has always remained the core focus of our activities. We became the the Gay and Lesbian Welfare Association or GLWA in the early 90’s, and have recently re-established ourselves as a more inclusive Diverse Voices.

Diverse Voices’ activities are supported by a volunteer management team which includes: Convenor, Secretary and Treasurer.

We run training programs throughout the year for people wishing to become telephone counsellors. Contact us for more information on training dates or to learn about other volunteering opportunities.

Funding of Diverse Voices relies on government grants, individual donations, corporate sponsors, and our fundraising activities held throughout the year. If you wish to make an online donation now, please click the Donate button on the right side of this page.

For more information on our history, please see our History page.

Our Mission and Values

To provide an anonymous peer to peer teleweb counselling service that listens to and supports the diverse voices that make up our community; aiming to make useful referrals, improve the mental health and overall well-being of those who contact us with unconditional positive regard.

As an organisation we…

Believe that the physical and mental well-being of our community is vital to our on-going development, and empowerment within the wider community.

Listen to, engage, support and connect with those within our community which includes everyone who has the potential to experience oppression because of their sexuality, gender or identity, including allies.

Respect and value an individual’s diverse experiences and expressions of sexuality, gender and other diverse identities.

Strive to remain transparent in our dealings whilst working to maintain the privacy of our members and the community who engage with us.

Strategically network and collaborate with individuals, groups, organisations and services in order to assist in meeting our and their values and mission.

Train and support those within our organisation to undertake their roles and responsibilities with the appropriate skills and knowledge.

our commitment to celebrating diversity

Diverse Voices does not advocate, support or practice discrimination, but rather chooses to respect the inherent dignity of all persons by supporting diversity and endorsing equal rights.

Diverse Voices recognises its legal responsibility to not discriminate based on race, religion, age, national origin, language, gender, sexual orientation and/or mental or physical disability. However, we also recognise that there are many other forms of discrimination not covered by law. Diverse Voices does not limit its anti-discrimination practices to those groups and individuals mentioned in law, but rather chooses to embrace and celebrate diversity in all its forms.

We do this by:

– Valuing and respecting differences in individuals.

– Appreciating the variety of characteristics that make individuals unique.

– Championing and becoming allies to those who experience individual or social difficulties by taking affirmative action if required to redress handicaps.

– Encouraging the use of inclusive language as a means of avoiding unintentional discrimination through language.

– Addressing internal and external prejudices through diversity training.

– Giving access to the organisations complaints process to anyone who feels they have been discriminated against by Diverse Voices.

– Actively pursuing a more diverse organisation.

Should you be experiencing difficulty engaging with Diverse Voices because of your diversity please contact us by emailing [email protected]

Embracing diversity is everyone’s responsibility.
